In one of many images captured by my brother, David V. Leonard, during his spring and summer forays into late-steam territory in 1958, we view streamlined 4-8-4 No. 6405 joining the lineup for the GTW's commuter rush at Detroit's Milwaukee Junction terminal on August 12. By this date these U-4-b Northerns had been displaced from their proud position at the head of main line Chicago-Port Huron varnish — the the Inter-City Limited, the International Limited, or the Maple Leaf and its westbound counterpart, the La Salle. When this photo was taken No. 6405 still had another year to operate, apparently making its last run in September of 1959.
