In 1938 Lima Locomotive Works constructed six streamlined 4-8-4s, Nos. 6405-6410, for the Grand Trunk Western. Near-duplicates of the Canadian National's U-4-a class, these locomotives of class U-4-b differed mainly in the comb-like, smoke-lifting air intake ahead of the stack. High 77-inch driving wheels contributed to their speed, as did their 275 p.s.i. of boiler pressure. They had 24x30-inch cylinders; they weighed 382,700 pounds and produced 52,457 pounds of tractive force. For other specifications, see the page for No. 6408. I acquired this Lima builder's photo from the Rail Photo Service of Boston sometime in the early 1950s.
