The Great Western Sugar Company was one of the last carriers in North America to operate steam engines in revenue service. Here, 2-10-0 No. 90 of the Great Western poses for an unidentified lensman at Loveland, Colorado on October 10, 1959. Baldwin Locomotive Works erected No. 90 in 1924 to its light Decapod design. After more than 40 years of operation in the Colorado sugar beat fields No. 90 was sold in 1967 to the Strasburg Railroad in Pennsylvania, where she still operates. Weighing 212,000 pounds, she musters 46,512 pounds of tractive effort and rolls on 56-inch drivers. Her 24x28-inch cylinders are supplied with steam at 190 p.s.i. of boiler pressure. No. 90 has a grate area of 54 square feet, 2343 square feet of evaporative heating surface, and 553 square feet of superheater surface. Carl Weber provided this image from his extensive collection.
