IC 4-8-2 No. 2449 rests at the Markham Yard terminal near Chicago on August 11, 1946 in a photo by Arthur B. Johnson of Springfield, Missouri. In the late steam era the 2400-series 4-8-2s were used between Chicago and Kankakee, Illinois, as power for New York Central trains between Cincinnati and Chicago, on the former "Big Four," that used Chicago's Central Station. As built in 1926 by ALCo, No. 2449's group has 73-inch drivers and 28x28-inch cylinders. Their original boiler pressure was 200 p.s.i., yielding a tractive effort of 51,121 pounds. Over time, however, the Paducah Shops raised the pressure of different locomotives to 230 or 245 p.s.i., generating tractive efforts of 61,824 or 65,856 pounds respectively. (For other specifications see the commentary for No. 2454, following.) No. 2449 was scrapped in 1957. This image was acquired through an eBay auction.
