In a photo of unknown origin from my brother David's collection dating from March 1954, crew members inspect the ashpan of Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 No. 264 at an unstated location. These Northerns had 74-inch drivers and 26x32-inch cylinders, and carried 250 p.s.i. of boiler pressure. The S-3 class had a grate area of 96 square feet, 4475 square feet of evaporative heating surface, and 1440 square feet of superheating surface.
