In 1981, Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 No. 611 was restored to operation as a key player (along with class A 2-6-6-4 No. 1218) in the Norfolk Southern's steam program, pulling many special trains throughout the system to the delight of steam fans and the general public. My brother, Rev. David V. Leonard, snapped this transparency of the locomotive at Sterling, Illinois, in October 1983. With the abrupt end of the steam program in 1994, No. 611 was returned to display at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke. However, in 2014 the locomotive was moved to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer and was restored to operating condition in 2015.
