Metra's EMD F40PH-3 120, the "City of Woodstock," shoves an inbound commuter to a stop at the Morton Grove, Illinois depot in 1990. Metra, the commuter rail division of the Illinois Regional Transportation Authority, received these units from the builder in 1976-77. These 4-axle 3,000-horsepower units have a head-end power generator in addition to their prime mover, allowing the latter to run at reduced speed during station stops. Otherwise the main power unit would have to continue running at track speed during stops to supply electricity to the train, a waste of fuel and a noise issue.
