Mohawk No. 2545, shown here at an unknown location and date, was a member of class L-1b that the American Locomotive Company delivered to the New York Central in 1917-18. These locomotives had a grate area of nearly 67 square feet, with evaporative heating surface totaling 4430 square feet and superheating surface 1212 square feet (other specifications for the class are given on the following page for No. 2560). Although most members of the L-1 class eventually had Elesco bundle-type feedwater heaters, No. 2545 was one of 30 that received the Coffin type. The L-1 class was used almost exclusively in freight service, as the footboard pilot of No. 2545 reveals. This locomotive was dropped from the NYC roster at the end of 1952.
