Nickel Plate EMD GP9 500 crosses the GM&O diamonds in Bloomington, Illinois in October 1957 with a local or switching move. The shanty at left is the famous "BN Target," monitoring train movements where the GM&O crossed the parallel tracks of the Nickel Plate and the NYC's Peoria & Eastern. The crossing was not an interlocking; all trains were required to stop before proceeding. The location was a favorite photo spot for me and my brother David, who snapped this image. This unit, in the NKP's class ERS-17d delivered in 1956, became Norfolk & Western 2500 in 1966 and was retired in 1981, being traded in to General Electric the following year.
