A pair of Soo Line EMD SD40-2 units bring a westbound manifest through Genoa, Illinois, in September 1990. Unit 763 was outshopped in 1973, and is reported to be out of service and stored. Unit 6603 arrived from the builder in 1980, and was later transferred to the roster of Soo Line parent Canadian Pacific retaining the same number. The trackage here is the former Milwaukee Road main line through northern Illinois, acquired by Soo Line in 1985. In 1997 the line was sold to I&M Rail Link (IMRL), but then passed to the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad in 2002. In 2008 the IC&E was acquired by the Canadian Pacific and merged into its former partner Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern, also acquired by CPR. Today, therefore, the line is operated as part of Canadian Pacific, the ultimate owner of the line when I took this photo.
